When Music Meets Dance: A Harmonious Match

Concerts | October 26, 2024

The intersection of music and dance is a collaboration that transcends cultures and generations. This dynamic partnership creates a powerful synergy that resonates with the human experience, making it a universal form of expression and communication. This is what happened on September 13th at Theatre Lirico Giuseppe Verdi with the Sonoro Quartet, based in Belgium, and the dancer Giacomo Calabrese, from Naples.

“It’s fantastic that MERITA gives us time and space to make projects like this. Otherwise this would not be possible”, said Sarah and Jeroen right before the concert.

Between the applause, the audience commented “Wonderful evening. All the artists were outstanding”, “Wonderful and engaging pairing”, “Pleasant ballet paired with dance”. But among others the most striking comment certainly was “The music took body with the dancer”.

When dancers interpret melodies through their bodies, they transform sound into visual art, breathing life into music in a way that words often cannot. This relationship enriches both forms of art, as beats and melodies can evoke a wide range of emotions, inspiring dancers to convey feelings of joy, sorrow, longing, and celebration.

The project was already performed by the Sonoro Quartet on 14th April at Villa Pignatelli, Naples, with the same dancer. On that occasion when asked about expectations, Giacomo Calabrase, the dancer on stage, said “Being an improviser dancer, I’m curious about what I’m going to do, but I’m sure the music will be great”. On the other side, the quartet was enthusiastic to see how music would influence him.
